You CANNOT trust Rob Wittman’s promises
He has never kept his campaign pledges
Over the last several weeks, in the WTF: Wittman Truth Files series, we’ve looked at all the things voters really care about right now.
We’ve also addressed other issues important to VA-01 in the “Broken Promises” series (Energy, Infrastructure, and Chesapeake Bay).
Today we’re pulling all of that together.
Every politician makes campaign promises, and rarely do they keep them all. Circumstances change, priorities shift, resources come and go, and needs evolve over time. It’s unreasonable to expect a politician to accurately foresee the future, and follow through on all the promises they make as they compete for your vote.
But should we expect them to keep none of their promises, and to fail to fully deliver on any of their pledges?
Because that’s what Rob Wittman has done.
Nineteen years of failed pledges
Rob Wittman’s first campaign was in 2007, and he’s published a list of campaign issues in each subsequent election. The Internet never forgets: thanks to the WayBackMachine, we’ve been able to collect and analyze every single Wittman campaign pledge from the last 19 years – and so can you.
Organizing these pledges by the issues that voters most care about now, we’re asking the question:
Did Rob Wittman follow through on his campaign pledges?
(For certain voter priorities, Wittman has never pledged anything – Elections & Democracy, Agriculture & Farming, and Housing – though he has had some activity on them during his career.)
Here’s a summary of what we found, with links to articles (from the Wittman Watch archive) that explain each finding a little more. Read on for our analysis.
Of course we’re compressing a lot here; distilling all this information into a simple table is a challenge!
You’d think that almost 20 years in Congress would have given Wittman plenty of opportunity to actually deliver on the things he has said to buy your votes in the past. But look at the table: all but two items are “Broken,” “Disappeared,” “Never Delivered,” or (in the case of certain high-priority voter issues) “Never Promised” at all! He has only “Partially kept” one item, with one other “Mixed” result.
Let’s survey some of the “highlights,” listed by their priority for VA-01 voters. (We covered most of these in more depth in the WTF: Wittman Truth Files and “Broken Promises” articles; links are provided below.)
Affordability
Wittman’s votes on H. R. 1 and his endless support for Trump’s tariffs have slammed VA-01 households’ budgets.
Real average hourly wages fell 0.3% over the year through April 2026.
Inflation peaked at 4.2% (May 2026), 3.5% in June 2026 (higher than in October 2024 under Biden – what happened to lowering prices “on Day One”?).
Energy costs are up +15.7% year-on-year (YoY), and gasoline is up +26.7% YoY.
Tariffs cost VA households an estimated $830-$2,100/year.
20,000+ VA-01 residents are projected to lose Medicaid coverage.
Jobs & the Economy
After gaining jobs earlier in 2025, overall Virginia lost 10,400 jobs in 2025 and is projected to lose 17,800 more in 2026, our state’s first job loss in a non-pandemic year since 2009. And the annual figure understates the trend: more than 30,000 of those losses came in the second half of the year.
Virginia fell from 10th in job growth in 2024 to 38th in 2025, to 48th by May 2026, having lost 51,400 jobs between May 2025 to May 2026 — more than any other state.
Nationally, America lost around 200,000 jobs in the last three months, and the Trump administration had to correct job numbers down for several preceding months.
Tariffs “particularly affect Virginia soybeans, poultry, pork, and tobacco,” according to Virginia Tech.
Healthcare
310,000 Virginians may lose Medicaid.
Virginia hospitals lose $2B/year.
10 Virginia hospitals are on a national at-risk list, including VCU Health Tappahannock.
Cuts to rural hospitals are permanent.
The fund only replaces up to 37% of their losses, and lasts only five years.
Healthcare for members of the Armed Forces, veterans, federal employees, and seniors remains unprotected.
Prescription drugs remain costly.
Earned Benefits
Virginia SNAP participation fell 14.4% in five months. Nationally, 3M+ people lost food assistance.
The Social Security Administration now has fewer employees than at any point since 1967, impacting quality of service.
Wittman’s vote on H. R. 1 accelerated the Social Security Trust Fund’s insolvency by a year; it now may run dry by 2032.
Immigration
Wittman voted to hand $70 billion for ICE and Border Patrol through the end of Trump’s term. All that money is just a bandaid because the underlying problems with immigration law remain unfixed
Wittman helped kill the 2023-24 bipartisan Senate border deal, even though it was the most conservative in 40 years and was endorsed by the Border Patrol union.
Crime & Public Safety
Despite claiming to “Back the Blue,” Wittman said nothing after what the Justice Department called likely the largest single-day mass assault on law enforcement in American history. Roughly 140 officers were assaulted, and prosecutors say even that number is too low.
Foreign Policy & Defense
Wittman demands oversight of aid to Ukraine while voting against oversight of American strikes. This makes no sense.
He has failed to capitalize on VA-01’s defense industry to build more jobs in the district.
Elections & Democracy
Joined 120+ House Republicans on the Texas amicus brief to overturn four states’ results (Dec 2020).
Voted to sustain the objection to Pennsylvania’s electors (Jan 6, 2021). Blocked the January 6 commission.
Supports voter ID laws that would disenfranchise tens of thousands of American citizens.
Education
Voted to advance the dismantling of the Department of Education after saying he opposed that. Title I, IDEA, Pell Grants and teacher preparation all flow through the department. Its staff has been cut roughly in half.
Energy
Zero enacted energy laws of substance. Voted to eliminate clean-energy tax credits.
Silent while the administration tried to cancel a Virginia project representing $6 billion in investment, 2,000 jobs and $3 billion in potential energy savings. A federal judge stopped it, not Wittman.
Environment & the Bay
Virginia’s seafood industry is a $1.1 billion contributor supporting 7,100+ jobs. Roughly 6,000 Virginians work on the water, including Wittman’s own son. But the words waterman, oyster, crab, aquaculture, menhaden and seafood industry appear a combined ZERO times across 19 years of Bay pledges.
The Bay was graded a C (50%) in June 2025, worse than the C+ of 2024 and barely changing from the C- (42%) when Wittman started in 2007. Eleven of 15 monitored regions are declining. Nitrogen reductions hit 59% of target. Deadline moved to 2040.
Voted against the Inflation Reduction Act’s agricultural conservation funding in 2022, then voted for H. R. 1, which rescinded the remainder and stripped the nutrient-reduction targeting language.
“I am focused on ways we can address climate change” appears on Wittman’s taxpayer-funded House site. The phrase “climate change” appears nowhere on the 2026 campaign platform.
One promise for constituents, a different one for voters.
Infrastructure
Voted against the Moving Forward Act (2020) and against the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (2021), calling the IIJA the “Green New Deal in disguise.” But VA-01’s three largest infrastructure outcomes – which Wittman gleefully uses for photo-ops – were funded by the IIJA: Norfolk Harbor deepening, Long Bridge ($729 million) and $1.48 billion in Virginia BEAD broadband money.
Virginia’s universal-broadband-access plan was not federally approved until Nov 2025, funded by the bill he opposed.
No movement at all on “sustainable funding” for regional airports.
Fiscal Responsibility
His 2010 platform pegged the debt at $14.294 trillion. It is now near $40 trillion after Trump/Wittman votes added almost $3 trillion to the debt in just the last 12 months.
Lists three bills as accomplishments: No Budget No Pay Act; Stay on Schedule (S.O.S.) Resolution; Inaction Has Consequences Act. None have become law in 19 years.
In 2007, he claimed he would eliminate “waste, fraud, and abuse.” 18 years later, he used the exact same phrase to sell the largest Medicaid cut in history.
Agriculture & Farming
Voted three times (April 9, 2025, September 16, 2025, and February 10, 2026) to block House votes on tariffs that Virginia Tech found particularly affect Virginia soybeans, poultry, pork and tobacco.
Voted for H. R. 1’s SNAP cuts, which reduce the food dollars flowing to local farms. Roughly 24 cents of every dollar spent on food at home reaches farms.
Housing
He made no housing promise in 19 years and eleven campaign platforms – but recently sent a mailer to VA-01 residents about his “fighting to lower housing costs for families.” He’s literally done nothing except vote on the most recent bill, the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, which passed the House 358-32 and the Senate 85-5, and which Trump unsuccessfully held hostage to demands for a voter ID law before it became law without his signature on July 10, 2026.
Guns / Second Amendment
In 2013 he said, “As a gun owner myself, I believe that the Constitutional right to keep and bear arms must be protected.” He never proposed any bills on guns whatsoever, but consistently voted for expanded gun ownership and has an A rating from the NRA Political Victory Fund.
All mention of guns and the Second Amendment has disappeared from his 2026 website, although he still lists it on his official House website.
Reproductive Rights / “Family Values”
No stated position on reproductive health care, ever.
His House site’s “Family Values” page is an adoption story containing no policy pledge, and the 2026 campaign platform has no section on the subject at all.
It’s clear that Rob Wittman has said a lot but done very little to deliver to the people of VA-01. Just look at that table again. How can anyone possibly consider re-electing a person who has failed so spectacularly? But it’s even worse than ineptitude; he’s taking the paycheck without doing the work at all.
You can’t believe him because he’s not even paying attention
Rob Wittman has been coasting for years, and you can’t trust a damn thing he says. Here’s a simple example: his live 2026 campaign platform says:
The debt has not stood at $34 trillion for roughly two years! Since Trump came into office again in 2025, the debt has shot up to $39.8 trillion, thanks to the billionaire tax cut giveaway, tariffs, job losses, Iran War, and so much more – all of which are 100% supported by Wittman. Rob is running for re-election on a platform he has not bothered to update because he isn’t even trying to be accurate. The fact is that Wittman only cares about the national debt when spending might help you, but otherwise he’s happy to mortgage your future in favor of his donors’ interests.
Wittman has been counting on your ignorance, your belief in his “moderate” personality, your faith that he is a man of honor who will follow through for you in Congress. Based on his 19 years of failed delivery on his pledges, do you really believe him now?
