Wittman Spouts H.R. 1 Disinformation Again
Carefully crafted propaganda doesn't fool VA-01
Another H.R. 1 disinformation bomb from Wittman yesterday. Tiresome! We’ve dealt with H.R. 1 again and again and again. The Republican Propaganda Machine is spinning at max speed to deceive VA-01 voters about the bill’s horrors. So we’ll review this again, louder for those in the back.
Wittman claims he “fought to secure wins” via the “Working Families Tax Cut.” First, that is a marketing nickname for the bill. It’s actually H.R. 1, so don’t get confused. Second, he voted party-line for H.R. 1, so he didn’t “fight” - he cowered in a corner and hung the rest of us out to dry.
In fact, at one point he (and Jen Kiggans in VA-02) “demanded” that HR1 not include Medicaid cuts, only to roll over and play dead once it became clear that sacrificing their own constituents was the way they could get a tax cut for their billionaire donors. A stark example of Wittman’s silent complicity, and how what he says and what he does are two very different things. Actions speak louder than words!
Some numbers in the message (child tax credit, standard deduction) are accurate, but - and this is important! - he presents White House projections about these token concessions as delivered results. In simple terms: he’s portraying propaganda about the future as historical fact.
Crucially, Wittman omits key data about H.R. 1. It will cause 260,000-323,000 of us to lose healthcare coverage, risk the loss of food assistance for 78,000 people, cost VA hospitals $26B, threaten 7 rural hospitals with closure, and impose $355-700M+ in new state costs. What does Wittman say about all of that? NOTHING!
Wittman claims H.R. 1 “saved” 149,000 jobs. Not true. This refers to jobs at risk if the 2017 tax cuts were to expire. H.R. 1 just extended current law, maintaining the status quo. At the same time, he ignores the bill’s provisions that will result in Virginia’s loss of 16,700-26,600 jobs in energy analysis projects.
Wittman’s message is carefully crafted disinformation. Not a mistake, not an error - deliberate disinformation, intended to deceive VA-01 voters. He:
Embeds accurate numbers in a fundamentally misleading narrative
Takes personal credit for a party-line vote, presents projections as facts
Completely erases devastating impacts on hundreds of thousands of constituents, and
Creates a false reality through strategic omission.
We deserve better. And we can get it! Check out the candidates vying to run against Wittman in November, and determine who you’ll vote for in the primary.
